Crowns and Veneers Q&A

What are dental crowns?

Dental crowns are artificial teeth shaped as caps that cover a broken or damaged tooth or replace an entire tooth using dental implants. They are typically made of:

  • Porcelain
  • Gold alloy
  • Ceramic
  • Resin

They repair the cusps (the sharp rises on the biting surface) of your teeth, restoring the tooth’s strength, shape, appearance, and ability to bite and chew.

What are veneers?

Veneers are made of porcelain or resin composite materials that resemble a natural tooth. Dr. Rojas makes them into thin shells to attach to the front of the tooth and improve your appearance. Patients tend to choose porcelain veneers because they have a more natural appearance.

What is the procedure for a dental crown?

Similar to receiving a filling, Dr. Rojas uses a local anesthetic to numb the treatment area. She will then shave down the damaged tooth for the dental crown to fit on top properly.

Once she completes this, Dr. Rojas places a temporary crown over the tooth while she creates an impression for the permanent crown. You’ll have to wear the temporary crown for at least two weeks until she makes the permanent one.

When you return, she’ll replace the temporary crown with the permanent one, cementing it in place and adjusting your bite to ensure that you’re comfortable.

What is the procedure for a veneer?

Your visit for veneers begins with a consultation with Dr. Rojas. Whether you want only one veneer or a whole mouthful, she discusses the choices with you and will then take X-rays to confirm that your teeth can support veneers.

Beginning the placement of the tooth, Dr. Rojas removes a portion of the enamel from the front of your tooth to create a rougher surface for the veneer to attach. She gives you a temporary artificial tooth to cover the treatment area while she creates your permanent veneer using a mold of your teeth.

Upon returning for a second appointment, Dr. Rojas replaces the temporary veneer with the permanent one, making adjustments as needed. When you’re both satisfied with the shape, she bonds the veneer to your tooth, giving you a new and improved smile.

Why should I get dental crowns or veneers?

There are many reasons why patients get crowns or veneers, including if you have:

  • Broken or chipped teeth
  • Discolored or misshapen teeth
  • Large fillings or root canals
  • Weakened teeth due to grinding and acid reflux

Dr. Rojas recommends dental crowns to her patients as a necessary, long-term remedy for damaged teeth. On the other hand, she recommends veneers to patients seeking to improve the look of their smile.

If you think that veneers or dental crowns might be the right choice for you, call Era Dentistry, or use the online booking tool to receive the help you desire.
